Close to 4 stars( 3.5 maybe?) for setting and place, but the characters lacked depth and Kate's complicated personal relationships puzzled me. I felt like I had to circle back to try to figure out certain scenes.
Why was the Berend the cook stroking her hair when she had a nightmare? Why was everything so secretive in her life? Just a bit more explanation would help.
I adore the Owen Archer series and I think the Margaret Kerr series are fine, although a bit on the dark side.I am sure it is partly me, the reader, but I like a bit less violence in my reads.
Historically they are wonderfully done.

The Service of the Dead A Novel Kate Clifford Mystery Candace Robb 9781681771274 Books Reviews

Candice Robb disappointed me greatly with this novel full of violence and mayhem.
scattered and boring
A good read.
An enjoyable read. Not quite as good as Candace Robb can be - the main character can be a tad unbelievable at times. But with all the background and atmosphere of the times that makes Ms Robb so enjoyable to read.
I read this book in less than a day. I knew who the villain was fairly quickly but I enjoyed Robb's character development and her descriptions of early York. I hope she continues this series as well as the Apothecary Rose series.
Betrayals, courtly machinations, old family feuds and murder provide a heady dose of intrigue. Kate Clifford is a strong and intelligent heroine. "The Service of the Dead" is a rich and satisfying story that will captivate the reader's attention.
I enjoyed the Owen Archer books so, I looked forward to the release of this new series. It was well worth the wait. While the first book of a series must spend time introducing all of these new folks to us, the time was not wasted. Robb walks us through the streets of 14th century York at a brisk pace. She guides us through the history and landscape of a city fraught with challenges.
Our companions are interesting, funny, sad, and devoted to the woman who employs them. There are big dogs, former assassins, former thieves, the in-laws from hell, (did I mention there are big dogs?) and a dead guy that shows up in Kates hotel.
Robb does a good job with all her books and this is no different. This is a satisfying mystery, peopled by well-developed characters plopped down in the middle of some turbulent times. I really enjoyed it, as I do all of her work. There are big dogs in here.
