The Melier Women of Dor Nye Book 1 eBook Poppy Rhys
The Melier began with so much promise. The 4-armed alien hero, Soren, is suitably other, strong and protective, but also a complete love bug. Just sweet, sweet, sweet. Lucia, the heroine, is a believable combination of intrigued, scared, and horrified when dealing with an alien. Even after they smex the first time, she's understandably weirded out by his physiology. Lucia is kind, brave, funny, and smart. While I didn't particularly care for the two-sided conversations she had with herself in her head, I liked Lucia a lot. I loved the first forty percent of the novel. Then Lucia and Soren arrive on her home planet and things became both campy and....uncomfortable.Small Spoilers Ahead.....
For one thing, Soren and Lucia's sexuality is paraded in front of her family. Family witnesses nudity, noises, fluids, etc. This continues throughout the novel and becomes a bit of a family joke.
Soren's brothers arrive and casually mention that spouse-sharing is common among royal siblings on their planet. Lucia is initially outraged at this idea and throws food at them. However, her new in-laws quickly become very interested and aroused observers of Lucia and Soren's sex life. Lucia doesn't mind and they start to turn her on too. Lucia's family witnesses some of this behavior. One brother, so aroused by the smells and sounds of Soren and Lucia getting it on, tries to flee the room and ends up (ahem) losing control all over the floor IN FRONT OF HER FAMILY! When her husband is away, a randy brother-in-law becomes her substitute body pillow in bed.
By the time Lucia gave birth in a ceremony with extended family present, for me, it was way too much and too familial. Somethings I just don't want mom, dad, grandma, brother-in-law, and sister to see or hear. Plus, Lucia becomes an exhibitionist brat, who says things like 'feed me faster' to one in-law while another fans her and her husband rubs her feet.
A lot of these bizarre interactions are over-the-top campy and supposedly funny, just not to me. Then ALL of a sudden, we get a detailed description of pregnant Lucia's torture at the hands of vengeful bad aliens. Even worse, we get the description twice--once in real time and once in court. Really gross, disturbing, and at odds with the tone of the rest of the novel.
At the end, it's pretty clear that Soren's brother is asking to join in his relationship with Lucia. Alas, this story had potential but the author is going in a direction I can't follow. I'm not a menage fan, especially when it involves siblings. This may be The Melier, but its obviously gearing up to be The MelierSSS.

The Melier Women of Dor Nye Book 1 eBook Poppy Rhys Reviews
I loved the depth of the characters; even the ancillary ones were well fleshed out with realistic quirks (and it only gets better in the second book!).
The plot had some predictable moments bit even those threw you for a bit of a loop.
I also absolutely loved the humor. I myself have a quite dirty sense of humor and the witty repartee often had me giggling, chortling, and straight out snorting - luckily I was alone while reading.
One of the last bits I loved was the lack -that I noticed- of errors. As readers, we all know that when a work had a multitude of errors, it pulls us right out of the story. So unsatisfying. However, that unfortunate experience did not occur for me in this book.
Well worth the read. While heartedly recommend it and the rest of the series so far. Enjoy!
Wow - I loved these two books! I read this one as part of my Unlimited benefits - today I went back & BOUGHT both while the price is still only 99 cents. This author should have these published hard-copy for the readers that aren't electronic. I don't imagine these books will be this inexpensive for long. Some readers referenced editing issues - perhaps this is a new release - I didn't encounter any editing problems.
The world building was fantastic, the whole cast of characters well-done. The further into the story, the more ALL of the characters you understood, the main H & h developed their relationship in ways that made sense & that I could delight & connect with. The action scenes & the sex scenes were fresh & interesting - surprising me & presenting a range of emotions from yew to wow as I visualized the scenes. I often find myself skim-reading the sex scenes in all but my favorite stories because how many different ways can A fit into B? But I have to say I didn't miss a word when reading both of the Melier books!
The story lines were well-developed & had the texture that a Novel has - they were not over a few minutes after you started into the read.
The heroine's behavior while 'spunky' at times was adult - not 'young girl' behavior - which was a relief since so many Alien romances I've read recently trend towards 'virginal' & barely out of 'teen' romances (even when the h is supposedly in late 20s+).
If you've read any of my other reviews - you'll know I'm not prone to many 5 stars or 4 stars really. I'm surprised I loved the sequel as much as the first one! How many times does that happen?
Thoroughly enjoyable - here's really, really hoping this new author continues to write. I hope we get 'GiGi' & 'Vok''s stories next.
.Lucia, on a bounty that goes pear shaped in a big way barely escapes with her life by stealing a ship that turns out to be loaded with valuables - including a slave that has suffered a memory wipe. As she & Soren make their way back to her planet, they begin a friendship that continues to deepen & evolve after arriving planet side.. She has a great family with thoroughly likable characters. The book is well paced and doesn't get bogged down as it resolves plots & subplots. This is book one. Although it leaves you with good reason to read book 2, it does not leave you unsatisfied with a cliff hanger. You simply feel invested in the characters enough to want to see how they handle the next challenge.
This will be my first review so bear with me. If you are a sci fi lover get this book the price is not bad and it's actually a full novel. It kept me interested the whole book which is not easy to do since I read constantly. Is something different from what's out there and can't wait for the next book. Sorry I didn't give details don't want to ruin. Hoped this helped
