This book is an amazing down-to-earth, true-to-life read. Treva's sanctification process is not unlike yours or mine. I could really identify with her needing to forgive a parent and the struggle to ditch a career and manage the home. Kim Cash Tate is a gifted author who knows how to sneak a whole bible study into a novel. I can't wait to read more of her work. This is my first book by this author.

This book blessed me! It was like Bible study, faith in action and a praise party!
Kimberly did this one! I ready this series out of order, but it was so worth it to come back to this one!
Awesome story!
This was one of the best books I have read in awhile. I could not put it down and did not want it to end. It was thought provoking, spiritually challenging, and the characters were real. I loved how the author detailed each character and his/her personality. It was a book that taught the reader what God's word says about who we are in Christ and helps the reader to dispel negative self images and increases our awareness of just how necessary it is to forgive and how God can transform your life when you do. The main character, Treva, taught the reader much about love and following the word even when you ain't feelin' it (ha!). Kuddos to the author!!!! The only downfall was the difficulty with some of the format for the kindle. Some sentences flowed together where there should have been a paragraph.
What happens when your "little world" crumbles and all you are left with is time? Treva Campbell can tell you firsthand that God invades your personal space - like what personal space. Years of wrongly conceived notions with far-reaching effects are done away with. The desires of a heart are met, even desires she didn't know she had. Her good and GOD'S GLORY!
I must admit that some of the issues that it dealt with as far as employment and race goes were very deep. But being this is an African American woman writing this, I really could relate to it since I'm AA myself. But more importantly what touched me the most about this book is that, you have to trust God with all your might, not one glimmer of doubt. Also it touched on success and money equaling to being happy and everyone has to have their own litmus test of being happy. Even though the main character thought success was one, thing, God slowly was changing her mindset and it took her to move back to her hometown and be around a group of women for a Bible Study for that to open her mind. I even want to start to Study the Book of Ephesians myself. This book has shown me that even though you're Christian doesn't mean that you have everything together, and it doesn't certainly mean that you're going to understand everything test that God sends your way. My co-worker is the one that even told me about this great author and now I'm hooked on her for life!
I love Kim Cash Tate. I honestly didn't know that good African American Christian fiction existed until I got a free copy of Faithful on kindle about a year ago. Up until then, I read Christian fiction that I enjoyed, but I knew wasn't written with me, or other black females, in mind. I still enjoyed the stories, but I couldn't see myself in the characters' lives.
But Kim's book provided me with strong characters that I could relate to. I love her writing style and her stories. Since reading Faithful, I have devoured every book that Kim has written. This one has to be my favorite. Her other books are uplifting, and a bit on the lighter side. This one was really bold and deep. It is a powerful book, that touches on several important issues. It left me crying, and rejoycing, along with the characters at times. I love this book, and I know that I will read it over and over again.
"Heavenly Places" tells the story of Treva Langston, whose identity is tied up in being a successful attorney to make up for what she feels are her less-than-desirable looks, particularly her skin color. I am as different from Treva as a person could be - I am a white, Catholic, legal secretary, but the story of how Treva comes to know that God loves even her really spoke to me. The book works on many levels - there's the story of Treva and her family, the story of the Bible study group that Treva reluctantly joins and the issues each of these very different women face, and last but hardly least, the Bible study itself - I started reading Ephesians and trying to follow along where they were because just the snippets of study they were doing were so interesting! I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in (a) Christian fiction, (b) "group" books (where a group of women do something - pray, knit, read, whatever, and get to know each other), or (c) Bible studies. Or any reader, actually - this is one of my favorite books and I think there's something almost anyone can take from it.
I truly enjoyed this book. Kim Cash Tate has woven many relevant issues of today into a beautifully written book. Colorism, the struggles of motherhood, and family relationships bring the story and characters to life. In a world where how you look and how much money drive the lives of many, this book drives home the only opinion that truly matters in the end is God's.
